An epic trip to major sporting events throughout Europe & the USA

Day 34: Salzburg

Mamfa started the day with a ParkRun in front of Shloss Hellbrun – his 25th different location. Seemed like a good milestone but there was a guy there with a shirt noting he had done 100 different locations! Out of the 54 people that ran, only about 10 were locals.

We then adventured to Werfen Ice Caves which involved a trolley bus, train, shuttle bus, walk, cable car and walk to get there. But it was well worth the effort. The Ice Caves are the largest in Europe. After a hot walk up the hill in 34degrees it was a bit of shock to the system to go into 0degrees in the cave. The ice formations were spectacular which the guide lit up with magnesium strips as there is no lighting in the tunnel. I carried a kerosene lamp to light the path (which meant freezing fingers).

The scenery in this part of Austria is amazing.

Then it was back to Salzburg to visit Fortress Hohensalsburg which we had spent the last couple of days viewing from afar. It was a funicular ride to the top and a very interesting tour through the State Rooms, Magical Palace and various museums outlining the history of the fortress from its inception in the 11th century as a residence to being continually expanded and fortified up until the early 16th century.

One passage had a collections of horns that played Mozart (Salzburg was where he was born and lived).

Mozart horns

The view from the tower gave a great outlook over Salzburg and in the video below you can hear the church bells ringing with a backdrop of techno from a concert that was happening at the same time.

Old music meets new music

I also got to explore bit as well.
