An epic trip to major sporting events throughout Europe & the USA

Day 21: Vilnius – Lithuania

A big day of walking today around Vilnuis – 28,000 Mamfa steps which is about 40 million Thorny steps. No wonder I’m tired. Vilnius Old Town is full of historical sites and some great scenery.

Bastion Hill was an old fort protecting the city dating from the 16th century which has been restored. We had a chance to check out the weapons as well

We left Vilnius for a short while to enter the micronation of Uzupis that has its own constitution, anthem and currency. The constitution is written in 44 different languages along a wall. Some of the terms include:
– everyone has the right to die, but this is not an obligation
– everyone has the right to love and take care of the cat
– a cat is not obliged to love its owner, but must help in times of need
– everyone has the right to be happy
– everyone has the right to be unhappy
– everyone has the right to be undistinguished and unknown
– everyone has the right to be idle

Moving on to the Hill of Three Crosses up many, many more than three steps and up the funicular to Gediminas Tower.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes and the Cathedral Basilica was then a nice stop for lunch of potato sausages with bacon.

After lunch we visited the Presidential Palace where I did a bit of lawn mowing to earn my keep.

Wrapped up the day wandering through Literary St where the walls have been adorned with homages to over 150 Lithuanian authors then watching some of Euros and T20 World Cup – it is a sporting odyssey after all.

This day in sporting history (16 June)

1984 Edwin Moses wins his 100th consecutive 400-metre hurdles race.
